The Process of Developing and Printing Black and White Print:-
Black and white printing works by exposing light through a negative then onto light sensitive paper which stains the image onto the paper. The enlarger shines a light through negative and focus it on the baseboard of the enlarger.
Photographers Who Have Used Film to Shoot Portraits:-
Herb Ritts:
Ritts has mostly taken black and white images for his commercial assignments, he mostly tries to use natural lighting in his work. He has photographed famous people through his career.
Mary Ellen Mark:
Mary's images were all mostly black and white, but mostly known for photographing 1960s counterculture, mostly taken pictures of the Vietnam War protests. She has photographed for magazines such as Rolling Stones and Vanity Fair.
The Process of Achieving Darkroom Traditional Print:-
You achieve darkroom print by exposing light through a negative to light sensitive paper and then using chemicals to reveal the image. The lighter areas on the negative allow more light to get to the paper and produce a darker area.
Darkroom Equipment:-
Enlarger:
We used a focus finder to zoom in on the negative and figure out the right focus for the image too. A framing Ease keeps the photographic paper still while the paper is getting stained by the light. We used a timer to time how long the light should stay on until it has stained the photographic paper.
Print Processor:
We used the print processor to process and print our photographs after we zoomed and altered it to how we like it.
Pentax K1000 Film Camera:
This is the camera we used to photograph with in the studio.
Studio:
This is the studio we shot in for the portrait photography.
Darkroom Traditional Print Workshop:-
Firstly I did a test print. This will check the density of the print. We did 3 second intervals of light across one sheet of paper and from that could tell how much light the final print needed.
Summary:-
In this workshop we learnt the origins of photography and how it was first introduced. We learnt how to process the the darkroom print and how to use an old fashioned film photography camera. I liked the editing and processing part of this topic since we can process it ourselves.
